The years after World War II saw an influx of young
couples to the suburban areas outside of Philadelphia.
Having survived the Great Depression and a World War,
these young people were ready to begin a new life. The
suburbs promised  modern housing, good schools and
a safe place to raise children. Builders responded to
these desires by filling in the inner-ring suburbs with
tract housing and the most prominent developer in
Darby was Warner-West and their famous rowhouse.
Lansdowne Park and Lansdowne Park Gardens (the
rowhomes off of Springfield Road) were a popular
choice for young families. Remember the family you
"shared steps" with? Many of us considered our same
step neighbors as extensions of our own families.

Living in the Park allowed kids to walk to school, play
Little League Baseball and spend long, lazy days at
Darby Swim Club. And all that without once having to
ask "for a ride". Sure, the houses were small but
nobody seemed to notice, since the average rowhouse
family included at least three kids and many boasted
four, five and even more. How did our parents find any
privacy to make that happen?
